Practice Makes Perfect with a Mock Interview

For some students, interviewing for a job or graduate school position can be a stressful event that results in anxious behavior and stammering answers to questions. The way you present yourself in a job interview could make the difference between achieving your goals or getting a rejection letter.

Fortunately, The Career Center offers practice or Mock Interviews to all Florida State University students. Last year almost 250 students participated in the program. Just like a real interview, students submit their resume and set an appointment with a Mock Interview Mentor. These mentors are FSU students who have received training in how to ask questions of and provide feedback to candidates on their interviewing skills. Interviews are customized to the individual career goals of each student. Students can even record their practice interview sessions on videotape or DVD for later review.

Employers also strongly support the Mock Interview program. For one week each semester, seasoned professionals from companies such as Target, Wolseley, Enterprise Rent -A- Car, Waffle House, Capital City Bank, Federated Insurance, Buckle, and Apex Systems volunteer their time to act as mock interviewers. Students have found their experiences with both the student and employer interviewers to valuable. For example, Ashely Minich stated that "The Mock Interview Program contributes to the impression our University makes on recruiters as FSU grads interview and enter the workforce. This makes FSU an enticing place for recruiters to include on their quest for new employees, and gives students increased future opportunities."
