Many different entities post job =

information on the Internet, and the quality ranges from very poor to
excellent. No government or =
other organization
is watching out for you, so you have to use your own judgment about
quality.
Whenever you post information about yourself via the Internet, such as you=
r resume,
the personal and professional information you include may be used in ways =
you
hadn’t intended. Be a =
wise
user and think about possible ramifications for the information you provid=
e.
One example is a woman who worked in animal testing labs who got lots of s=
pam
from animal rights activists.
Print guides, magazines, brochures, etc. may have useful information for y=
our job
search that hasn’t made it to the Internet. Print yellow pages or directories=
for a
certain city are sometimes easier to use than online versions. People have lots of information
that’s not documented on the Internet, for both career planning and =
job
searching. Dealing with people in person can be more interactive if they
don’t text on a regular basis – you can ask questions and get =
answers
or feedback immediately.
The most direct way is to go back to the main URL and search from there, b=
ut search
engines could also be used.
Several ways exist for you to ide=

Sharing ideas with others in your career field is one of the primary benef=

of professional associations, as well as providing a forum for creating an=
d maintaining
professional standards. Is a=

reduced membership rates for students.
When you join an association, you receive their literature about professio=
nal meetings
and conferences and have access to “members only” sections of =
the website,
including the membership directory.
You can identify people for information interviews on career choice=

you’ve got a lot of time before graduation, or on advice where to
relocate and who might be hiring for those who graduate soon.
Other than the networking aspect, professional association Web sites conta=
in valuable
career information, and sometimes are the primary source for such informat=
ion,
such as beekeepers. Many pos=

openings, even for non-members, and provide links to other sources of
information in a particular career field.
So, how do you identify possible associations? Other than through your academic

start the research process and identify places to volunteer, do internship=

or find summer jobs.
Chamber sites can be perfect if you’ve got a
particular city in mind – look for the membership directory.&=

about them in Hoovers, and articles about them in Business NewsBank and

Another route if you have a specific employer in mind, either to research =
in general
or for an interview, is to go to that website for particular information a=
bout
them. For example, Dupont.com
lists its vision statement, financial information, publications, position
statements, job openings, and work/life balance (benefits).
Will the information about a particular employer be impartial or biased on=
their
Web site?

*The best place to check out job openings in your field is with specific e=
mployers
that you have already identified.
Most post openings and other career information on their Web sites,=

sometimes offer the option to apply online.
*Only a certain percentage of jobs are advertised on job database services
such as Monstertrak or CareerBuilder.&nbs=

You can usually search by keyword, type of job and/or industry, and
location.
One feature of employment databases is sometimes the ability to use “=
;intelligent”
agents – you set up criteria that the database uses to search for jo=
bs,
then it contacts you when it gets a hit.&=
nbsp;
In CareerBuilder this service is called a “Job Alert” a=
nd
it can be very helpful if you’re sure that your criteria will catch =
all
the job openings that you may be interested in.
In the olden days, most people looked for employment in the Sunday classif=
ied section,
and that’s possible today online as well as in print. Let’s look at two examples =
