Describe your job search process. What were some challenges you faced or things you learned from the experience?

I originally heard about the internship opportunity through Chris Freire, the CEO of Student Opportunity Center at FSU, who put me in contact with Lucas Lindsey, the executive director at Domi Station. Having no previous experience in marketing or copywriting, I spoke with Lindsey about my career goals and sent him samples of my personal writing as well as a paper I turned in to my ENC 2135 course at Florida State. After receiving my portfolio samples and resume, Lindsey tested out a working relationship with me by giving me the task of writing a story spotlighting an FSU student startup, DivvyUp. The story was published on Startup Southerner and, finally, got me an interview for the Marketing Coordinator internship position.

If you used any Career Center services, resources, or events to obtain your part-time job, what were they? How did they support your application process?

The Career Center helped provide feedback on my resume.

What are some takeaways from your part-time job? How will these help prepare you for the next step after graduation?

Being around all kinds of professionals at Domi Station, I have picked up on communication skills, emailing skills, presentation skills, and networking skills. Those are some of the general perks of working at a business incubator and coworking space. My job itself taught me about deadlines, copywriting, advertising, and marketing, which are areas that I want to get into for my career path as a copywriter in advertising.

What advice do you have for students currently launching a part-time job search?

Become a "yes" man when you feel afraid about chasing an opportunity that might seem like a long-shot at first, step outside of your comfort zone, and take in every small lesson and benefit from your part-time job to reflect on how it has helped you grow and how you can get more out of them.
