Describe some of the steps you took to obtain your current position.

I applied for the position through SeminoleLink after speaking with several Deutsche Bank representatives during the Engineering Day career fair, as well as the Seminole Futures career fair.

How far in advance did you prepare?

I prepared first by attending Engineering Day and Seminole Futures in January 2015, where I spoke with Deutsche Bank representatives at both events. For the career fairs, I researched the company, reviewed my resume and my experiences, and practiced walking a recruiter through my resume. I also prepared several questions for the recruiters and was sure to ask them about their educational experiences, as well as their experience at Deutsche.

I received a request for an interview in February 2015 and prepared for several weeks until my first interview in early March. After my first interview, I was called back for a second round and was given two weeks to prepare for this. I made sure to prepare for behavioral type interview questions, as well as know why I was interested in the job and how my engineering background would make me a qualified candidate for the job.

How did Career Center resources help advance your career?

I used SeminoleLink to upload my resume and easily applied for the open position. As an engineering student, I have very limited time to fill out lengthy job applications and apply to all the different jobs I am interested in. SeminoleLink made it extremely convenient; once I uploaded my resume, it was just a one-click step to ‘Apply.’ With this easy system, I was able to apply for several jobs that would’ve taken me hours in a traditional online application.

Describe some of your responsibilities or duties.

I worked on the Disaster Recovery team within Global Technology and Operations. An example of a project I was assigned was the decommissioning of a database that held all the Disaster Recovery plans for the 1000+ applications that the Bank utilizes on a daily basis. I was responsible for tracking the applications and their plans, as well as migrating plans and information to the new database and tracking system. I was given responsibility and concrete projects; my team truly relied on my progress.

What was a typical day like?

On a typical day, I would arrive at the office at 8 a.m., and I would go through the numerous emails that filled my inbox overnight. Working for a global company, our offices all over the world operate on different time zones, and it was extremely important to stay on top of emails and communication. I would spend the usual mornings on team meeting calls or shadowing my boss, who would speak with team members in the U.K., India, and Germany daily.

I would spend the afternoons working on the various projects my team had assigned me. I was free to schedule meetings with the other interns to work on our joint intern project, or any employee within the bank that I wished to speak with and shadow for the day.

What are some major takeaways from your experience? How did this help prepare you for the next step in your career?

During my experience, I definitely learned a lot about corporate work environments and what it was like to work for a global organization with offices throughout the world. I learned how important communication between teams is and with upper management as well. I learned how to work in a team with people from a variety of different backgrounds. I can take away all these experiences as I look for full-time job opportunities for after graduation.

Did your experience help clarify your career path? How so?

This experience helped clarify my career path because I realized I did not want to work within technology or within the financial services industry. While my internship experience was excellent and I would recommend any student to go after this opportunity, I truly missed my chemical engineering curriculum and it reaffirmed that I would like to pursue a career in biotechnology. I truly have a passion for chemistry and biology, and I believe I would be most passionate and do the best at my job in this industry.

Do you have anything further to share with other Noles?

I would advise other students to start early! I am a senior now and this is my first internship; I wish I had experienced more (in terms of work opportunities) during my undergraduate career.
