Sarah Sweat

Sarah Sweat, a recent FSU featured student profile, wears many hats on FSU’s campus. In addition to her roles as Freshman Interest Group (FIG) leader, International Programs student recruiter, and Finance Chair on Dance Marathon’s 2016 Executive Board, she demonstrates academic excellence as a mechanical engineering student. In the summer of 2014, Sarah gained engineering experience outside of the classroom with an internship at Cummins Inc.

What were some Career Center services you used or events you attended? How did these help you in landing the internship?

I attended the Engineering Day career fair to meet with Cummins Inc., among others. I was offered a day-after interview at The Career Center with Cummins, as well as had my second interview over the phone in one of The Career Center’s conference rooms. Had it not been for the services at The Career Center, I would have never known about Cummins, let alone had the opportunity to interview and intern with them. I have also had my resume looked over several different times to prepare for various events.

What is one thing you learned from your internship experience?

I learned more than I can express into words. I took training courses in Engine Familiarization and Engine Performance, and I learned how to drive a manual transmission semi-truck. I also learned how a Fortune 500 company operates, as well as how to communicate and operate internationally with other departments and customers.

What are your future goals?

I will be interning this summer with Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan in the Product Development Department. I will also be getting my master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Florida State next year through the BS-MS Program.

What advice do you have for current students?

I would highly suggest to attend Engineering Day, talk to many companies, and go to information sessions. It is also important to be prepared with your attire and resume.
