Full-Time Job Search

Finding a full-time job is a process—not a single step. To understand the important elements of a job search, it can be helpful to break the process up into five general steps. (see diagram).  Notice how the diagram depicts the job search process as a cycle Movement through these steps does not always follow the same linear order and it is possible that steps will overlap at times.

Job Search Cycle

  • Timeline: Expect the job search to take 2 to 4+ months from application to start date.
  • Pro-Tip: Treat your search like a campaign. Starting early gives you space to tailor materials and build real employer connections without rushing.

Job Search Time line

Don't stretch yourself thin by applying everywhere. Focus your energy by defining your ideal target at the intersection of your values, skills, and interests.

Example Target: Finance roles + Based in Florida + Mid-size firm culture

  • Define 1–3 clear targets to guide your search.
  • Be intentional—specific targets lead to higher-quality applications.

Not every job is posted on a job board. Many opportunities are created through professional connections or filled internally before being advertised.

  • Network actively: Connect with alumni and industry professionals.

Explore these tools: LinkedIn,  MentorFSU, NoleNetwork, or CareerShift to discover unadvertised openings and key contacts.

  1. List & Rank: Draft all the companies you're interested in, then rank them.
  2. Focus Your Energy: Spend 80% of your time on your Top 5 target employers.
  3. Research the Rest: For lower-ranked options, focus on light networking and basic research before submitting quick applications.

Stay Organized Keep track of job descriptions, contact names, and application dates using a simple spreadsheet or an online organizer like CareerShift.

Tailor Your Materials

  • Customize your resume and cover letter for each target role.
  • Prepare field-specific assets if required (e.g., portfolios, writing samples).

  • Social Check: Clean up social profiles and polish your LinkedIn header.

Craft Your 30-Second "Elevator Speech"

When introducing yourself to recruiters, keep it concise:

  1. Who you are: Name, major, class standing/graduation date.
  2. What you bring: Key skills, relevant experience, or core strengths.
  3. The connection: Why you’re interested in their company specifically.
  4. The handoff: A thoughtful question to kick off the conversation.
