2018 FIRST PLACE UNDERGRADUATE – MARQUITA RUSLEY

Marquita is a fourth year senior majoring in biochemistry. She aspires to pursue a career in medicine as an anesthesiologist while also being involved in the non-profit sector. She would love to have her own non-profit dedicated to inclusive education and resources for students with learning disabilities in countries where education is not as accessible. The Career Portfolio has helped her keep an ongoing, organized list of community service, leadership positions, and research that she has been involved in at FSU. Marquita believes that her portfolio will allow her to reflect on the great experiences that shaped her into the leader she is and prepare her to develop a personal statement that will allow her to demonstrate her passions.

2018 FIRST PLACE GRADUATE – BRYAN KELLER

Bryan is a third year Ph.D. candidate in Biological Oceanography. His research focuses on the spatial ecology of coastal sharks. After earning his Ph.D., Bryan hopes to become a research professor where he can continue studying vulnerable fishes while teaching ecology courses. The Career Portfolio has proved to be an extremely valuable tool that helped synthesize his relevant teaching and work experience; he is sure that his Career Portfolio will be extremely helpful as he searches for employment after graduation.

2018 SECOND PLACE – RENATA KUBA

Renata is a first year Ph.D. student in the Instructional System and Learning Technologies program. Her career aspiration is to secure a job as an UX Designer and become a professor in a top ranked university. Her research interests include mixed media, interactive installations, educational technology, art and technology, and human-computer Interaction. She aspires to create tools that can enhance immersive experiences and improve interactions triggered by gestures, body and performance. In particular, she is interested in applying technologies to make learning more enjoyable and intriguing. She believes that the Career Portfolio has helped her reflect on her past experiences and how these experiences have shaped her career path.

2018 THIRD PLACE (TIE) – FOREVER YOUNG

Forever is a master’s student majoring in Finance. In July 2019, she will begin her career with United Technologies Corporation as an employee in their Financial Leadership Program. After rotating through various corporate finance functions, she hopes to use the skills she develops to further her career in corporate finance. Forever wants to create an organization which helps disenfranchised students in K-12 schools develop transferable skills outside of the classroom, while mentoring them through their academic studies. The Career Portfolio Contest helped express herself beyond a single-page resume. Through this competition, she explored some underlying traits and characteristics behind her accomplishments, including her transformational leadership style and drive to achieve communication.

2018 THIRD PLACE (TIE) – SOFIA MEDINA

Sofia a third year undergraduate student in Applied Mathematics. She hopes to attend graduate school to pursue a doctoral degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics. Sofia has a strong interest in mathematical modeling and math education. Research and educational instruction are equal parts important to her career and educational goals. Building her Career Portfolio allowed her to reflect on her professional and academic experiences. The structure of the Career Portfolio provided a framework that gave useful guidance in considering how to best demonstrate her skills. The Career Portfolio also allowed Sofia to see how her past work was directly related to her career goals and encouraged her to continue building the groundwork for achieving her future objectives.
