Describe your job search process. What were some challenges you faced or things you learned from the experience?

The job search process in itself is more challenging than I initially thought; however, through personal connections, I stumbled upon 'Consumer Direct Care Plus'. The process in becoming a private patient caregiver, though, has its challenges. The first involving compatibility, as I had to ensure my patient and I were compatible enough to communicate and work alongside one another. Other challenges have included learning of your patients' particular needs and helping them to the best of one's ability while also helping them maintain a sense of independence.

What are some takeaways from your part-time job? How will these help prepare you for the next step after graduation?

I learned so much from this experience, not only about myself, but about the disability community as a whole. It is known how important communication is in itself; however, I learned how vital it truly is. With strong communication, I was able to help my patient with her day-to-day activities while also helping them maintain as much independence as possible. I feel as though this has helped prepare me for my next steps after graduation as it has taught me how to adjust to my surroundings quickly and communicate effectively.

What advice do you have for students currently launching a part-time job search?

Network! Connecting with others, whether they be fellow students, friends, or teachers, is vital in finding part-time opportunities, such as mine.
