Describe the steps you took to obtain your internship/research opportunity/fellowship.

I originally learned about the marketing internship with University Relations through the InternFSU program. After submitting an application and making efforts to network, I was accepted into the role at the start of the Spring 2019 semester.

How far in advance did you prepare and begin applying for your experiential learning opportunity?

I began seeking internship opportunities as early as the November before I was hired. My advice is to always start your search early, because this usually leads to having more options.

If you used any Career Center services, resources, or events to obtain your job offer, what were they? How did they support your application process?

Before applying to InternFSU, I wanted to ensure that my resume was competitive for a marketing role considering that I am an accounting student. I scheduled several appointments at The Career Center to update my resume. I also attended Resume Cafe to gain feedback from actual employers within Tallahassee.

Describe some of your responsibilities or duties during your experiential learning opportunity.

As a marketing intern for FSU University Relations/ Communications my main duty was creating ways to advertise the FSU license plate. The process entailed research, planning and networking with the FSU community. Once I drafted proposals, I would work with my supervisor to execute mini projects across campus.

What was a typical day like "on the job?"

The most unique component of this role was that every day looked differently. While some days I coordinated photo shoots, other days I worked on contacting different areas of campus or building my strategy proposal.

What are some major takeaways from your experience? How will these help prepare you for the next step after graduation?

My internship at University Relations taught me to not be afraid to try my new ideas. Even when failure occurs with one proposal, that one failure can be used as inspiration for the next project. I learned how to adapt to change, and balance planning/execution of various initiatives, while also building advocacy for the FSU license plate. This role gave me a glimpse of marketing management and consulting as it involved a lot of problem-resolution moments.

Did this experience help clarify your career path? If yes, how so?

This program confirmed my interest in business, while providing space to explore beyond what my degree entails. This experience helped me discover skill sets I was unaware that I possessed, and thus has led me to do further research to unfold a variety of opportunities for my career going forward.
