Describe the steps you took to obtain your internship/research opportunity/fellowship.
I campaigned with the help of the Advance Party for the position of Student Body President. Before the campaign, I had to apply for the position with the Advance Party. This was a 30 page application - along with a 30 minute presentation/interview.
How far in advance did you prepare and begin applying for your experiential learning opportunity?
I planned a month in advance, when the Advance Party announced and released their applications.
If you used any Career Center services, resources, or events to obtain your internship/research opportunity/fellowship, what were they? How did they support your application process?
One part of the application was a resume. I had the Career Center review my resume. They helped me organize my experiences into a one page, professional snapshot. This resume was attached to my application.
Describe some of your responsibilities or duties during your experiential learning opportunity.
As Student Body President, I represent my 41,000 fellow students on the Board of Trustees, and I serve as the executive for the Student Government Association.
What was a typical day like “on the job?”
Every day, I have office hours in between classes. Typically, I make phone calls and respond to emails, attend committees of which I am the student representative. In the evening, I attend events and give speeches at student organizations.
What are some major takeaways from your experience? How will these help prepare you for the next step after graduation?
I learned crucial skills in managing a group to complete tasks, navigate bureaucracy, and create a common vision. I believe I can take these skills and be a successful project manager.
Did this experience help clarify your career path? If yes, how so?
Yes! In my experience, I had the pleasure of meeting many professionals in my career field of interest: banking. This experience gave me access to successful individuals who have given me advice and help in job searching.
