Describe the steps you took to obtain your internship.
I took a class with the supervisor and leader of the internship program I was interested in. I made sure my face and name were known to them as well as my skills.
How far in advance did you prepare and begin applying for your experiential learning opportunity?
A semester in advance however I had gained experience over time to show a portfolio.
Describe some of your responsibilities or duties during your experiential learning opportunity.
I had to learn new styles and terminology of wigs. I had to act a leader to those in the shop and teach them what was newly learnt to myself. I had to organize and clean as well as help make spreadsheets.
What was a typical day like "on the job?"
A typical day on the job was clocking in and checking in with my supervisor. She would be very kind and give me a list of tasks as well as a deadline as to when they needed to be done. I would let the others that were working the shop know the tasks and delegate those tasks between the lot of us. Then when those tasks were finished my supervisor would speak to me about what the expectations were for the next day of work.
What are some major takeaways from your experience? How will these help prepare you for the next step after graduation?
Major takeaways from this experience were putting another line on my resume, gaining opportunities in my field and helping me network. This prepared me for the next step after graduation by teaching me new skills I will need in the field I want to work in.
Did this experience help clarify your career path? If yes, how so?
This experience very much helped me clarify my career path! I want to work in theatre onstage and backstage and this solidified that aspiration.
