Describe the steps you took to obtain your internship.
I created a resume and cover letter to apply for an internship on NoleNetwork.
How far in advance did you prepare and begin applying for your experiential learning opportunity?
I began drafting a cover letter and created a resume that reflected my work experience a week before applying to my internship. However, I learned of the InternFSU program during my first semester of college and knew it was a path I wanted to take my sophomore year.
If you used any Career Center services, resources, or events to obtain your internship/research opportunity/fellowship, what were they? How did they support your application process?
I applied for my InternFSU position on NoleNetwork. Having a school-sponsored platform that encourages experiential learning made the process of finding internships easier and more accessible.
Describe some of your responsibilities or duties during your experiential learning opportunity.
As a news writing intern for FSU's Office of University Communications, I create and edit articles for the official news website of Florida State University. I edit about 3 articles a week for my supervisor and am assigned a monthly Student Star feature I interview and draft an article about. My intern peer and I also format the monthly faculty briefs and fact-check web copies.
What was a typical day like "on the job?"
Working for a hybrid internship allows me to work from home once out of my three-day work week. On a typical day, regardless of being online or in-person, my supervisor and I discuss my daily assignments at the beginning of the shift. This often consists of editing her articles before publishing, working on my Student Star feature, formatting faculty briefs, or assisting with any articles that require revision. Working in a news office means my daily workload relies on the news flow of the week.
What are some major takeaways from your experience? How will these help prepare you for the next step after graduation?
As I brace for my second semester working for the Office of University Communications, I am more familiar with the AP reporting and editing style expected of me. The internship also prepared me to navigate the office environment and work with my co-intern to complete my assignments. After graduation, I know I will carry my objective reporting skills and office etiquette into my future endeavors.
Did this experience help clarify your career path? If yes, how so?
Interning for the Office of University Communications clarified my commitment to a career in journalism. Before this internship, a majority of my writing revolved around research papers and media critiques. Although I entered my internship equipped with this experience, I can leave more confident in my objective reporting abilities.
