Frequently Asked Questions

Housing FAQs

Will I have a room to myself?
Not likely. The majority of the rooms are shared. All rooms have a bath either in the room or in the hall.
Can I check-in to the FSU DC Study Away Center before the official check-in date?
Early check-in is not an option. The FSU DC Study Away program operates year-round (Spring, Summer, Fall) leaving little time to clean the residence between terms and have the residence ready for your arrival. The dates for checking in and out of the residence will take into consideration the academic schedule of classes and finals to allow for full success.
Are there units with access from the street and no stairs?
Yes. One unit provides entry access at ground level with no stairs. All other units require the use of stairs either to enter the residence or to reach the sleeping areas.
Are there washers and dryers in the units?
Yes. There are washers and dryers available in each area as part of the amenities of the residence. Students living in that area will need to share the washers and dryers.
If I require accommodation to ensure my success, what resources are available to support my needs?
Please meet with the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) on the Tallahassee campus prior to your arrival in Washington DC. OAS will be able to assess your needs and provide guidance on how we can best assist you to ensure a smooth transition and a successful experience.
What do I need to bring with me to live for the term?
You will need to bring your personal toiletries, clothing, bed linens sized for a twin XL mattress, and your bath linen. You will need to remove anything you bring at the end of the term, so pack lightly.
What is provided in the communal kitchen in each residence?
Each kitchen is equipped with pots, pans, dishes, glassware, utensils, hot pads, and dish towels. Appliances include a full-sized oven, stove, microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator. These are to be shared with those living in the unit.
May I bring a microwave or small refrigerator?
No. Due to the electrical capacity limits, personal microwaves and refrigerators are not permitted.
Are we close to a grocery store where we can pick up food, drink, and supplies?
Yes. A Trader Joe’s is located within a few blocks of the residences, and a nearby metro station provides easy access to additional shopping areas. You may find it helpful to bring a small rolling cart for carrying groceries and supplies. Items such as laundry detergent and toiletries can be purchased after you arrive in Washington DC.
Is there a television in the units?
There is one large screen television in the lower level of the townhouse that all are able to watch. We hope you watch FSU sports together to cheer on the Noles!
Is Wi-Fi available?
Yes. Wi-Fi is available throughout the residences.
May I bring a pet?
No. Pets are not permitted in the residences.
How do I pay for my room?
As an FSU student, all of your room rent and program fees will be added to your student account. This will allow for any scholarships, financial aid, or grants to cover the cost of housing similar to the Tallahassee campus.
I am interested in bringing my vehicle – where should I park?
Parking at the property is not available. Parking on DC city streets can be challenging, and most places of interest are easily accessible via public transportation (Metro). For these reasons, we do not recommend bringing your personal vehicle.

Application FAQs

How will FSU partner with me to identify an internship site in Washington DC?
Drawing on the information provided through the application form/process, the FSU Career Center (with support from your Academic College and other FSU Departments) will identify and recommend internship sites for your strong consideration. We will extend a concerted effort to align your internship program with your preferences, but we cannot guarantee an interview in every case. Students will access personal consultation to tailor their application materials, prepare for an interview/internship selection process, and evaluate offers.
Will I have an internship when I arrive in DC?
We begin the internship consultation process with you as soon as you are accepted into the FSU DC Study Away Program. Although our application deadline is in advance of many sites’ deadlines, the earlier you apply to join us, the more opportunities will be available to you. It is always our goal to help you secure an internship before you arrive. In some instances, due to factors out of our control (such as an internship site’s selection process and background checks for specific roles), we cannot guarantee placement. We will partner with you one-on-one until you have an internship. Your timely responsiveness and sustained effort will lend itself to a successful pre-program experience.
What if I already have an internship site in mind or a commitment in hand?
While we will partner with you to secure a great internship experience aligned to with your interest area, we cannot guarantee an internship at any one place. Inviting new professional and career experiences is a recommended mindset. Should you have already secured an internship in Washington DC and are seeking housing during your program period, you must disclose this during the application process and initial intake consultation.
How many interviews should I expect as part of my pre-arrival process?
Student typically interview at two to four different organizations/agencies. Some students secure an offer through their first interview or begin the process with an accepted internship offer. Other students interview at a handful of organizations before securing and accepting an internship offer.
What types of questions will I be asked during my internship interview(s)?
Experts at the FSU Career Center have developed a Student Interview Guide to support you as you prepare for and participate in a range of interview settings. Further, FSU students can access Big Interview as a virtual training platform that combines training and practice to help improve your interview skills and build your confidence. (A unique registration is required.)
What do I do if I receive multiple offers from internship host sites?
Acknowledge your multiple offers and commit to open dialogue with all interested parties. Consult with your network of support, including the FSU Career Center, to make an informed decision and communicate your commitment gracefully. Sending a thoughtful e-mail or other correspondence expressing your gratitude for the offer is a marker of professional etiquette and highly advisable.
